Biography
Jim is a partner in the Advocates law firm. Over the past 40 years he has been driven by his passion for the construction industry and its people. And still, he remains intrigued by the challenge of solving complex construction disputes through trial, arbitration, adjudication or mediation.
The firm’s portfolio of clients includes some of Canada’s largest general contractors, and a large proportion of Ontario’s road and bridge building contractors. And so, Jim has litigated a wide range of disputes involving very technical construction problems. He draws on that vast experience to strategize practical client focused solutions so that, together with the team at Advocates, we get client disputes resolved.
Jim has experience dealing with geotechnical disputes including shoring, foundations, road building, blasting and tunneling; structural disputes including bridges, culverts, dams and subways; vertical construction including health care, residential, commercial and institutional; mechanical, electrical, and building envelope issues; along with many delay and impact claims. Jim has defended insured claims against designers arising from the structural failures of scaffolds, stages, tunnels, bridges, and building failures in concrete, steel, or wooden structures.
For 19 years Jim was on the Board of the London and District Construction Association serving as Chair for 2 years. He’s been recognized for 20 years by Best Lawyers in Canada and also continues to be ranked by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a Best Construction Lawyer in Ontario. He has been Certified by the Law Society as a Construction Law Specialist for more than 20 years.
In the 1990’s Jim trained as a mediator and began a parallel practice of mediating commercial and construction disputes. Jim has recently committed more of his available time to that work. Jim’s “Mediation Dates” calendar is accessible HERE should you wish to check dates and contact him about acting as a mediator for your dispute.
