Biography
Jim began his career with Lerners LLP where he was an associate and then a partner from 1985 until June 2004. He is a partner in the Advocates law firm.
Jim obtained his LLB from the University of Western Ontario in 1983 after completing a B.Sc. (Hon.) at Queens University in 1980. Since then he has successfully completed a number of mediation and arbitration certification programs with CDR Associates of Boulder Colorado, the Ontario Institute of Mediation and Arbitration, and the Advocates Society and acts as a mediator in commercial disputes. In 2004 Jim became one of the few lawyers based in Southwestern Ontario to be Certified by the Law Society as a Specialist in Construction Law. He has also been recognized by his peers in the practice of Construction Law, in both the “Best Lawyers in Canada” survey and the Canadian L’Expert directory survey.
Jim has written and spoken frequently on topics of interest to those in the construction industry. He has taught courses in Construction Law for both the Ontario General Contractors Association Gold Seal program and at Fanshawe College in London. He has been a guest speaker at programs offered by the Law Society, the OGCA, and the London & District Construction Association, amongst numerous other industry and professional groups and associations.
Jim has been an active member of the London & District Construction Association board of Directors since 1999. For many years he has been a contributing writer for the annual LDCA magazine. Jim was the founder, editor and publisher of “The Critical Path” Construction Law newsletter.
