Biography
David is both a Lawyer and a Chartered Accountant. He practiced taxation for 11 years with KPMG (Peat Marwick) in Toronto, and was elected partner in 1986. David joined McCarthy Tetrault in London in 1991, and formed the predecessor firm to Advocates LLP in 1996 with Tom Corbett.
David’s practice encompasses all aspects of federal and Ontario provincial tax matters including tax planning, compliance, representation and civil tax litigation. David provided income tax advice to national and multi-national public corporations in the early years of his career, and currently provides tax planning advice and assistance to owner-managed businesses and their advisors. David represents and assists clients before both the federal and the Ontario taxation authorities during tax audits, administrative appeals (Notices of Objection) and voluntary disclosures of non-compliance. He also represent clients before the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
David lectured on international taxation at the CICA In-Depth Tax Course for six years, and taught the CICA Advanced Reorganizations Course for 4 years. He has instructed at the Bar Admission Course of the Law Society, and co-wrote and instructed the Advanced Corporate Reorganizations and Advanced Partnerships training courses for CRA auditors from 1993 to 2003. David has prepared and presented papers for the Canadian Tax Foundation’s Management Tax Conference (1994) and Ontario Tax Conference (1993, 2002), and to numerous other groups and organizations. David is a former member of the London Tax Practitioners Consultation Group Canada Revenue Agency – Ontario Ministry of Finance, and a former member of the Ontario Ministry of Revenue ONT-TAXS Advisory Committee.
David served for 9 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Foundation Western at the University of Western Ontario, including 2 years as President of the Foundation. David previously served as a committee member of the London Health Sciences Foundation and its predecessor University Hospital Foundation, and was active in the North London Baseball and North London Hockey Associations.
